When you reset your clocks an hour forward for Daylight Savings Time, remember to change the batteries in all smoke detectors in the house. Some folks just hate to do this. “Those batteries are still good. They still have some life in them. I don’t want to throw them out.” Well, you don’t have to. Save those batteries as backups when the batteries in your walkman or flashlight die out. Did you know that some insurance policies could deny coverage on house fires if any of the smoke alarms are not working?
This is also a good time to review your family’s fire escape plan. Make sure there are two escape routes from each room. Practice these routes with your children. Children as young as three years old can learn how to respond to a fire. Fires spread very quickly. They not only produce smoke and dangerous gasses, they are also very noisy. Practice crawling close to the floor where the air is best, covering the mouth and nose. Select a safe, accessible meeting place outside the house. And, emphasize that once anyone goes to that meeting spot, stay there. Do not go back into the house FOR ANY REASON.

Welcome to Mastering Disasters 101. This is our new blog. We have used our 20+ years of experience in specializing in structural insurance restoration to develop an easy to use, interactive program to teach other contractors what we have learned. And we certainly learned the hard way. We made just about every mistake that we could have made. But, we dusted ourselves off and learned from these experiences.
We started out as new home builders and remodelers in 1984. By the late 1980’s, the building industry was taking a dive. So, we were looking for a niche within the building/remodeling industries in which we could build a large customer base, but even more important, a niche that would protect us from the usual factors that affect the building/remodeling industries. Luckily, we stumbled on the specialized field of structural insurance restoration. We started out slowly, but as time went on we added more and more customers to our customer base. That customer base includes homeowners, adjusters, insurance companies, agents and more. Think about it: how many jobs would you likely get from a homeowner over the course of thirty or forty years? Three? Five? Ten? Any one adjuster handles dozens of claims each month. If you help adjusters get the repairs done quickly at a fair price, help them get their files closed and have happy homeowners singing their praise, you’ll build relationships with multiple adjusters, agents and insurance companies. That translates into having your business recommeded over and over. Our work is not dependent on the economy, interest rates, season. Damage to home occurs all the time. Once that happens, insurance companies provide payment for repairs.
We’re small family owned business. We have completed over 5,500 insurance restoration jobs, totalling over $30 million. We don’t worry about keeping our jobs and providing for our families. What a blessing. Our program has been used trained contractors in all parts of the U.S. We’d love to hear from some of these contractors for their feedback and experiences in getting started in insurance restoration.
If we can do it, so can you.
